ABS and PIL sign emissions pact

The memorandum of agreement will see ABS act as an independent third-party verifier of PIL’s fuel consumption, transport activity and emissions data.

Book and claim mechanisms allow the environmental benefits of low- or zero-emission fuels to be tracked and allocated separately from their physical use. This enables companies to access and report emissions reductions even when such fuels are not directly available on specific routes, provided the system is supported by robust verification and registry frameworks.

ABS vice president, Global Sustainability, Rostom Merzouki said independent verification is becoming increasingly important as digitalisation accelerates across the maritime sector. “As digitalisation accelerates, independent data verification is essential to building the trust that drives meaningful progress,” he said.

“ABS brings deep technical expertise to this work and we are pleased to support PIL’s commitment to reducing emissions across its fleet.”

PIL chief marine officer, Abhishek Chawla said the partnership would enhance oversight and support wider adoption of alternative fuels. “Our MoU with ABS enhances oversight and independent assurance for book and claim, ensuring consistent and reliable assessment of emissions and fuel data,” he said.

The companies said the long-term collaboration will focus on improving emissions monitoring and reporting practices, while supporting PIL’s broader decarbonisation strategy in line with targets set by the International Maritime Organization.
