Biodegradable gear oil for thrusters

The synthetic ester oil has been developed as an eco-compatible alternative to mineral oil, offering the reliability required for these gears with their taxing lubrication requirements. Klüberbio EG 2-150 has successfully undergone a dynamic endurance test carried out by a propeller shaft seal manufacturer.

According to Klüber, oil loss via the water-side propeller shaft seals as well as oil leakage due to normal wear, accidents or operating errors are becoming a growing threat to the environment as marine traffic is increasing. The company says that the biodegradability of EG 2-150 is at least 60% after 28 days (tested to OECD 301 F), and it is not toxic to marine organisms (OECD 201, 202 and 203 tests).

The oil has a high scuffing resistance, long service life and oil changes are required less frequently, leading to reduced maintenance and lower disposal costs. It can be used over a wider temperature range than conventional mineral-based gear oils.

The product was developed and tested in conjunction with SIMRIT and Merkel Freudenberg, both suppliers of shaft seals and profiled seals to the maritime industry, and, like Klüber Lubrication, part of to the Freudenberg Group.
