Second of two ‘green’ PSVs from Kleven
Kleven has two yards on the Norwegian West Coast, at Ulsteinvik – where Rem Fortress was built – and the nearby Mykelbust yard. The company is primarily involved in building of advanced offshore support vessels, with fishing vessel construction, ship repair and maintenance as complementary activities. Kleven claims to be the largest Norwegian owned shipbuilding company, and, rather than building hulls elsewhere for completion in Norway, the company aims for a larger Norwegian content in its products. It operates a modular building system, with sections built at its own yards and in carefully-selected overseas yards. Kleven sees as one of its goals a planned return to carrying out a majority of its work in Norway, and intends to invest in new production facilities with high levels of automation.,
Rem Fortress is to the VS 485 PSV Mk II design from Wärtsilä Ship Design. She is of 4,900dwt, 85m length oa, 20m moulded breadth and 8.6m depth to the main deck. As with her sister ship, considerable emphasis was placed on environmental credentials at the design and fitting-out stages. Safety, reliability, fuel economy and above and below deck cargo capacity were other important considerations.
The vessel is classed by DNV with Clean Design notation, and light ice class (ICE C), making her suitable for use in the North Sea. To increase attractiveness to potential charterers, Rem Fortress carries oil recovery equipment. .
The diesel-electric propulsion plant is based on four SCR-equipped Wärtsilä 9L20 prime movers, each rated 1,580kW, to the company’s ‘low loss concept’ (LLC) specification, driving Alconza generators. There are two 2,200kW main azimuthing propulsion units, supplied by Rolls-Royce, type AZP 100 FP. The main power plant is supplemented by a Volvo Penta 230kVA D9MG genset. The ship is capable of a maximum 15.5 knots, with 11-12 knots as economic speed.
The main and emergency switchboards, transformers, inverters, power management system and integrated automation system were all supplied by Wärtsilä, which was also responsible for system integration.
Kongsberg supplied the K-Master DP2 equipment, which employs a Brunvoll 880kW AR63 LNC retractable thrusters and two Brunvoll 1,000kW tunnel thrusters, of type FU7LTC 2000. To comply with the forthcoming ballast water management regulations, a Hyde Guardian treatment system is fitted. Other machinery includes Tamrotor compressors, Westfalia separators and Parat Halvorsen steam boiler.
High carrying capacity and efficient handling operations were priorities for the cargo equipment, and a 1,005m2 working deck, designed for 10t/m2 strength, is equipped with two MacGregor Hydramarine deck cranes of 3t capacity at 13m reach, and winches supplied by Norwegian Deck Machinery. Below decks, Rem Fortress carries 330m3 dry bulk in six tanks, with other tankage comprising 2,548m3 ballast/drill water, 1,007m3 fresh water, 2,470m3 drill water, 693m3 mud, 418m3 brine, 204m3 base oil, 902m3 fuel oil, 145m3 methanol, 146m3 special product and 186m3 slop. Cargo pump equipment came from Ing Per Gjerdrum.
Accommodation is provided for a total complement of 22 persons, in 10 single and six double cabins, as well as office, two dayrooms, a mess room, galley, cold store, freezer room, dry store, laundry, fitness room and hospital room. All accommodation is air conditioned. Interior fit out was by Nordic Ship Interior, with electrical installation in the accommodation and wheelhouse by Kleven’s associated company Hareid Electrical Engineering. Galley equipment is by Beha, laundry equipment from Miele, toilet system by Jets Vacuum, and dayroom furniture from Ekornes.
Bridge equipment came from Furuno, with autopilot and gyro from Raytheon Anschütz. The communications package uses Sailor equipment from Thrane & Thrane.
Safety is taken care of by a Marioff water mist fire system, four 25-person DSB liferafts supplied by Brude, and a Maritime Partner Weedo rescue boat. Jotun supplied all paint used in the ship.
