Doug Woodyard

Doug was a former seagoing marine engineer who, on coming ashore, became a marine journalist. He was editor of Marine Week, and joined The Motor Ship as editor in 1977, a position he held until April 1985. He had built up a reputation as a respected and knowledgeable marine editor and journalist, and put this to good use as a freelance contributor to many marine publications. He made many friends in the industry, his reputation being enhanced by taking on the authorship of the later editions of Pounder’s Marine Diesel Engines and Gas Turbines, one of the standard text books for marine engineers.

Latterly, Doug served as editor of Marine Propulsion & Auxiliary Machinery from 2003 and after his retirement in 2009 continued as contributing editor of that journal, as well as writing technical features for its sister titles. We at The Motorship had hoped that after his recovery Doug could once again contribute articles to our pages on his favourite subjects of turbochargers and large two stroke engines, a wish that he shared himself. Sadly, that is not to be. Doug will be very much missed by us and by all his friends and contacts in the marine industry.
