Yara Marine wins Hyundai scrubber contract
The vessels are currently under construction for an undisclosed owner and will be delivered in 2016. The vessels will trade mainly in North European Emission Control Areas in the North Sea and the Baltics.
The scrubber systems will replace the ships silencers. The Yara said that the small size and low weight of the scrubbers mean that cargo space and ship stability will not be affected.
Yara noted that although bunker prices follow the general decrease of oil prices, marine gas oil is still roughly twice the cost of heavy fuel oil, giving large economic incentives for scrubbers.
Kai Låtun, VP Sales and Marketing, Yara Marine Technologies, said: “Ship owners are beginning to realise that exhaust gas cleaning systems are the most economical solution for meeting low sulphur emissions requirements. Our scrubbers are now proving their value onboard cruise, ro-pax and cargo vessels around the globe.”
