Greenports Award for ‘Wilson Dover’

The award, which was first launched last year, is given to the most eco-friendly vessel to call at the ports of Bremen and Bremerhaven in 2014 and is based on the Environmental Ship Index (ESI), which calculates the extent to which a vessel’s emissions fall below the internationally prescribed limits.

Wilson Dover, an 87.42m short-sea carrier which calls at the Port of Bremen at irregular intervals, had an average ESI score of 41.8, giving it the edge over Wallenius Wilhelmsen’s Aniara and last year’s winner Morning Linda.

The Wilson fleet consists of 111 general cargo and bulk carriers which carry more than 14 million tonnes per annum.

“Each of our vessels can carry any type of cargo and it is this flexibility which accounts for the excellent capacity utilisation of our fleet of around 87%,” said Thorbjorn Dalsoren, managing director, Wilson.

Going forward, Mr Dalsoren says the combination of good capacity utilisation, low fuel consumption and lower speeds (slow steaming) is the right strategy to improve sustainability in the maritime shipping business.

The greenports award competition also included a second eco-ranking to identify the shipowner or charterer which served the Bremen/Bremerhaven ports with the most environmentally friendly fleet last year. Here, again, Wilson outperformed its competitors. The shipping companies Rederi AB Veritas Tankers and EUKOR Car Carriers were awarded second and third place.
