Second Tote LNG containership launched

As part of a two-ship contract signed in December 2012 with TOTE, the 764ft Marlin class containerships will be the largest dry cargo ships of its kind in the world powered by LNG. This “ground-breaking” green ship technology, designed by NASSCO and its partners, will dramatically decrease emissions while increasing fuel efficiency when compared to conventionally-powered ships.

Perla del Caribe, which will carry cargo exports between US-owned ports, will reduce particulate matter by 98% and carbon dioxide emissions by 72%, the equivalent of removing more than 15,700 cars from the road.

Upon delivery of the first vessel in late-2015, the Jones Act-qualified ships will operate between Jacksonville, Florida, and San Juan, Puerto Rico.

In the past decade, NASSCO has delivered 11 commercial ships and has orders for 10 commercial ships, including the two Marlin Class containerships for TOTE. During this same decade, NASSCO has delivered 17 ships to the US Navy, including the new mobile landing platforms.

For its commercial work, NASSCO partners with South Korean shipbuilding power, Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME), for access to state-of-the-art ship design and shipbuilding technologies.
