SulNox enlists experts for emulsion assurance

Under the agreement LR will provide technical assessment of SulNOx’s emission-saving fuels, verifying its operational suitability for users of hydrocarbon fuels and providing recommendations on getting the best fuel and emissions reductions from the technology to secure optimum fuel and environmental savings.

LR will also work with SulNOx to secure a third-party commercial vessel belonging to a significant shipping line, on which sea trials of the technology will be undertaken. The results. Accredited by LR, will aim to foster confidence in the safety, performance and anti-pollution benefits of the emulsion fuels.

SulNox claims its fuels permanently homogenise any standard fuel and water, with the increased efficiency and speed of fuel burn leading to positive effects on both exhaust emission pollutants and fuel economy. Particulate matter emissions are reduced by up to 90%, contributing to an 8% increase in fuel efficiency. Lowering maximum flame temperatures also inhibits NOx creation by up to 60%.

The company has also signed a two-year agreement with the University of Cambridge’s Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology department to better understand how emulsion fuels reduce emissions and increase efficiency.

This is particularly true of the shipping industry where ship owners and operators are cautious or in some cases sceptical of the performance of new and unfamiliar eco efficiency technologies.”
