A boost for ship operators’ technical skills

The agreement grants GigaMare the right to deliver Wärtsilä-certified training on selected engines, enhancing the competence of Filipino seafarers.

With the Philippines supplying a large share of the world’s crews, the deal is expected to help ship operators improve efficiency, safety and vessel power management across the board.

“As the industry evolves, it is vital that seafaring crews are well equipped with the skills needed to operate vessels efficiently,” said Jari Ullakonoja, CEO & President of GigaMare.

International standards

Through Wärtsilä’s Land and Sea Academy, GigaMare instructors will be trained and certified to deliver programmes that meet international standards, including STCW requirements and the ISM code.

Courses will address real-world challenges using insights from Wärtsilä’s technical experts and field service engineers.

According to Tomi Urho, training services director, Wärtsilä, the collaboration ensures seafarers and ship operators in the Philippines gain easier access to high-quality training.

“This new training partnership is a significant step towards establishing highly competent ship crews that are capable of operating and maintaining vessels efficiently, safely and cost-effectively,” he noted.

Established in 2013, GigaMare has a decade of experience in maritime training. The new agreement means that it can now sell Wärtsilä product training directly to local customers.
