ABS and KRISO sign MoU for SMR technology

The agreement provides a framework for information exchange and joint research between the two organisations, focusing on concept designs for both an SMR-powered vessel and a floating SMR-based power generation platform. The partnership also aims to identify and develop relevant regulatory guidelines and international standards to support the safe and practical use of nuclear technologies at sea.

ABS chairman and CEO Christopher J. Wiernicki said nuclear energy offered “unmatched energy density, reliability, and strategic independence,” adding that it was emerging as “a legitimate, practical, and scalable solution” for a range of maritime and offshore applications, including powering ports and producing hydrogen, as well as for floating data centres, synthetic fuel platforms and desalination systems.

Patrick Ryan, ABS senior vice president and CTO, noted that modern nuclear technologies had the potential to provide a dependable energy source for the sector. “ABS is taking a leading role in supporting nuclear power projects in the marine and offshore industries through our expertise in international regulations and the development of class-related safety requirements. We are proud to work with KRISO to continue advancing SMR applications,” he said.

KRISO president Keyyong Hong emphasised the institute’s commitment to decarbonisation technologies, highlighting SMRs as a key area of focus. “Through this MoU, the integration of ABS and KRISO’s technological expertise and a clear division of roles will accelerate progress in core SMR technologies and help secure leadership in this emerging field,” he said.
