AiP issued for NH3-fuelled 200,000dwt bulk carrier

The companies aim to have a vessel operational in 2026.

ClassNK has issued its “Guidelines for Ships Using Alternative Fuels” as a necessary standard to minimise the risks related to ammonia-fuelled ships for the ships, crews, and environment by stipulating requirements for installation, controls, and safety devices. ClassNK carried out the design review of the vessel developed in line with Part C of its guidelines and verified the HAZID assessment.

Earlier this year, the class society issued AiP for the design of an 80,400dwt ammonia-fuelled Panamax bulk carrier developed by Japan’s Planning and Design Center for Greener Ships (GSC).

Also this year, ClassNK has issued AiP to NYK for an ammonia bunkering vessel, an ammonia floating storage and regasification barge, and an ammonia-fuelled tug.

NYK, MTI, and Elomatic have recently completed the concept design phase of a new Capesize bulk carrier and a very large crude oil tanker (VLCC) in a project that aims to build LNG-fuelled vessels that can be efficiently converted to an ammonia.
