Auramarine launches water in methanol device to further fuel uptake
The development supports the maritime sector’s increasing shift towards methanol as a cleaner fuel to meet decarbonisation targets.
The analyser addresses a key operational issue: water contamination in methanol. Water may be present in bunkered methanol either unintentionally or deliberately, and even low levels can significantly affect fuel quality. A reduced calorific value means higher bunkering costs, and in cases of excessive contamination, fuel may need to be discharged entirely—resulting in delays and further financial losses.
For example, a Ro-Ro vessel consuming 27,000 tonnes of green methanol annually—at an average price of €1,196 per tonne—could face losses of up to €1.6 million if the fuel contains 5% water. By providing continuous, inline measurement, the AM Water Content Analyser enables ship operators to detect water contamination early, reducing the risk of costly operational disruptions. The unit can be integrated directly into the methanol process piping, such as on the main bunker line, using a flanged housing, and relies on a dedicated sensor to analyse the fuel’s water content in real time.
