This innovative system, developed by LGE’s in-house engineering team, enables the safe, efficient and sustainable use of ammonia as a marine fuel.

“Our focus remains on delivering future-ready, sustainable solutions that help our customers navigate the transition to cleaner energy,” explained Neale Campbell, managing director of Babcock’s LGE.

“Ammonia has the potential to be a game-changer in the marine industry’s drive towards decarbonisation and sustainability.”

Ammonia, which emits no carbon dioxide when combusted, is increasingly being viewed as a viable alternative to fossil fuels in maritime propulsion. The ecoFGSS-FLEX integrates with existing ship systems and meets safety and environmental standards, helping shipowners align with the IMO’s emissions reduction goals.

“We’re proud to be working with Babcock’s LGE business to help make ammonia a practical, safe and cleaner fuel for the shipping industry,” said Andrea Olivi, global head of shipping at Trafigura.

“Their experience and technology are key to making this possible.”

Deployment of the system is expected to begin in 2027, with full operational capability by year-end. LGE is also working with other shipowners on additional newbuild and retrofit projects.
