ABC 6EL23 engine

The versatile, in-line six-cylinder unit encapsulates the Evolve concept of providing versatile solutions to the challenges faced by operators in embracing the energy transition. Pivotal to the design is an adaptable cylinder head, which facilitates a switch from liquid fuel to dual fuel, and to 100% gaseous fuels, eliminating the need for a specific fuel commitment.

The 6EL23 joins the inaugural four-cylinder 4EL23 engine introduced towards the end of 2021, followed just over a year later by the 20EV23, 20-cylinder vee-form model, representing the pinnacle of power (7,200kW) within the Evolve line-up.

In the six-cylinder offering, single-stage turbocharging is employed for maximum ratings of 1,230kW, 1,485kW, 1,650kW and 1,980kW at the respective 750/900/1,000/1,200rpm speed settings, with a two-stage turbocharger system used for installations delivering 1,800kW at 1,000rpm, and 2,160kW at 1,200rpm.

The 6EL23 is fully optimised to run efficiently on diesel with proprietary exhaust aftertreatment technology(EATS) for low emissions, complying with IMO Tier III and EU Stage V criteria, while engineered to provide a pathway to alternative fuels, potentially including methanol and hydrogen. The modular EATS arrangement has a compact diesel particulate filter and selective catalytic reduction unit with an integrated mixing pipe.

The engine platform features a highly efficient common-rail system, variable valve timing and Miller cycle, with micro pilot fuel injection for future dual-fuel functionality or a mechanical pump-line-nozzle fuel injection system for liquid fuels.

By virtue of an exchangeable power unit, comprising the cylinder head, valve train, water jacket, cylinder liner, conrod, piston, intake and exhaust elbows, the Evolve series champions ease of maintenance and a substantial reduction in overhaul time.

Given increasing fragility in global supply chains, ABC attaches particular significance to the corporate policy of self-reliance, whereby some 85% of engine components are produced within the ABC group, with the balance sourced from elsewhere in EU.
