Sirius Shipping orders four hybrid oil/chemical tankers

The vessels, belonging to the Ice Class 1A Evolution 8K series, will be constructed at the China Merchants Jinling Shipyard in Dingheng. Deliveries are scheduled for 2027 and 2028.

Jonas Backman, CEO of Sirius Shipping, highlighted the significance of the newbuilds, stating: “A lot of hard work has finally paid off, and we are very excited. These vessels are an important step towards our vision – to become the long-term first choice for our colleagues, customers, and society. The vessels will, of course, be built to Sirius standards and incorporate the latest technology for future compliance.”

The Evolution 8K tankers are an updated design based on Sirius Shipping’s existing LNG-ready vessels Saturnus and Mercurius. The newbuilds will feature advanced low-emission technologies and improved fuel efficiency. The vessels will measure 119.9 meters in length, have a beam of 19.4 meters, and a cargo capacity of 9,700 cubic meters.

To enhance their environmental performance, the tankers will be equipped with a 420kWh hybrid battery system and a 1,000kWh shore power capability, enabling zero-emission operations during loading and discharging in port.

Sirius Shipping emphasised the design’s focus on sustainability and crew welfare, noting in a statement: “With Evolution 8K, we’re taking another step forward in renewing the Sirius fleet. Designed in collaboration with FKAB, these vessels will provide the highest levels of sustainability, efficiency, and safety. The design also prioritises excellent working conditions and comfortable living quarters for our crew, since this is The Sirius Way.”
