ClassNK updates alternative fuel guidance

The latest version (Edition 3.0) of its ‘Guidelines for Ships Using Alternative Fuels’ now includes safety requirements for ships using hydrogen as well as those running on methanol, ethanol, LPG and ammonia.

In the newly released edition, the provisions of its rules including part GF of its ‘Rules and Guidance for the Survey and Construction of Steel Ships’ incorporating the IGF Code (International Code of Safety for Ships Using Gases or Other Low-Flashpoint Fuels), are taken as the basic requirements.

Following decisions made at the 2023 IMO Subcommittee on Carriage of Cargoes alongside lessons learned from ClassNK design reviews, extra requirements around the handling and use of hydrogen are now detailed at Part D.

Specifically, the Edition 3.0 now includes requirements that contribute to the safety of hydrogen-fuelled ships, such as preventing explosions triggered by hydrogen’s low ignition point and the possible effects on seafarers and the environment as a result of hydrogen fuel leakage.
