CMA CGM takes delivery of WinGD-powered flagship

At 400m loa and with a beam of 59m, the 20,600 teu Antoine de Saint Exupery is the biggest ship in the CMA CGM fleet to date. It is the first of three sister vessels ordered in 2015.

The ship is powered by a low-speed X92 engine designed by Winterthur Gas & Diesel (WinGD), with a power range of 24,420-73,560kW. CMA CGM noted that the modern engine uses 25% less cylinder oil than the equivalent engine from the previous generation. Combined with improved fuel consumption, this has lead to a 3% reduction in CO2 emissions.

Other fuel saving measures include a Becker Twisted Fin to improve the propeller’s performance, helping to reduce CO2 emissions by a further 4%. The ship also features a ballast water management system deploying UV and filtration.

Hanjin Heavy’s Subic Shipyard claims to have the world’s biggest drydock. With a width of 135m and a length of 550m, the company says it is big enough to build two 21,000 teu containerships side by side. Since the yard’s opening in 2009 it has built 119 ships.

The Antoine de Saint Exupery will begin operations on CMA CGM’s Asia to Europe route on 6 February.
