Contract awarded for five electric ferries

Holland Shipyards Group will build the 41m long electric ferries for GVB, Amsterdam’s municipal public transport provider. The ferries, which will operate in the North Sea Canal area, will be charged by a 1.600kW shore power facility.

The shore power system is integrated in the infrastructure, which means the existing landings do not require large modifications.

Charging the batteries takes approximately three minutes and is automatically done while boarding and unboarding the passengers and vehicles.

The first ferry is expected to enter service in 2021, the delivery of the last ferry will be in 2023.

These electric ferries will replace the current fleet, built in the 1930s. The replacement of the ferries is in line with the sustainability goals set by GVB and the Municipality of Amsterdam to provide zero-emission public transport in the Municipality of Amsterdam and surroundings.

Last year, GVB awarded a contract for the building of IJveer 64 and 65 to Holland Shipyards Group

Holland Shipyards Group has actively sought out and embraced projects with renewable components. It is currently involved in its first hydrogen project.
