The study will examine the technical, regulatory and commercial requirements for using the Generation III+ reactor design in floating nuclear power plants (FNPPs), which are intended to provide reliable electricity to regions facing grid constraints, limited land availability or lengthy infrastructure development timelines.

Under the initiative, CORE POWER will combine its expertise in marine systems integration, shipyard construction and commercial deployment with BWXT’s mPower reactor technology. The reactor was originally developed as an integral pressurised water SMR capable of generating 195 megawatts of electricity and 575 megawatts thermal power per unit.

FNPPs are designed to be manufactured in controlled shipyard environments before being transported to locations where power demand is high. Proponents argue that this approach could reduce construction risk, improve standardisation and accelerate deployment compared with conventional nuclear projects.

The feasibility study will include systems engineering, concept development, product requirements definition, regulatory assessments, marine integration studies and techno-economic analysis.

Mikal Bøe, chief executive officer of CORE POWER, said the project represented an important milestone in the company’s strategy to commercialise floating nuclear energy systems.

The study, funded by CORE POWER, is expected to help shape future decisions on engineering requirements, regulatory engagement, commercial structures and potential deployment pathways for floating nuclear power systems.
