Covid-19 pandemic sees remote surveys soar

One shipowner keen to take advantage of DNV GL’s remote service is Berge Bulk which approached the classification society together with the Isle of Man Ship Registry when the annual survey for its large capsize bulker, Berge Zugspitze, became due in the spring.

“In this case, Covid-19 restrictions posed additional difficulties for Berge Bulk, so they sought a remote annual survey,” said Marianne Valderhaug, director technical support at DNV GL – Maritime. “DNV GL and the Isle of Man Ship Registry both have long working relationships with the client, and both know the vessel well. Based on DNV GL’s experience with remote surveying, a date for this remote annual survey was agreed.”

Because this was a new situation, the Isle of Man Registry chose to take part as a remote observer. Deputy director, Toby Brooks, believes that efficient organisation was paramount. “Communication is the key,” he said, “both in the planning and during execution.”

Some hurdles were encountered, not least the problem of inadequate internet connection from some parts of the ship. The team rose to the challenge, using a portable router to provide access and where there was not possible, recording the survey and playing it back for the surveyor at a later time.

Conducting the survey remotely was new territory for Berge Bulk. “We are working actively to adapt remote technology,” said vessel manager, Jude Rex. “Being able to complete annual surveys when we need them is critical and we are happy to have this option.”
