The collaboration will focus on evaluating optimal eSAIL installation configurations while addressing the technical and operational requirements unique to LNG carriers. Areas under review include vessel airdraft, gangway access, mooring arrangements and compatibility with LNG terminals and floating storage regasification units.

The companies believe LNG carriers are well suited to wind propulsion technology due to their trading patterns, vessel speeds and available deck space.

Mann added that combining bound4blue’s wind propulsion expertise with Cryosafe Services’ operational LNG knowledge would ensure owners and charterers receive practical, compliant installation solutions.

Type-approved by DNV, eSAIL technology uses aerodynamic suction principles to generate lift and propulsion more efficiently than conventional rigid sails. According to bound4blue, the systems can help operators comply with regulations including EU ETS, CII and FuelEU Maritime.

Recent eSAIL installations have been completed on vessels operated by Odfjell, Eastern Pacific Shipping and Maersk Tankers.

Grant Wintle, chief operating officer at Cryosafe, said the partnership would support more efficient LNG carrier operations.

“Wind power was identified as having strong potential for this market, and we believe that bound4blue’s technology offers considerable value for these vessels,” he said.
