DFDS opts for scrubber on ‘Ark Dania’

Installation of the hybrid scrubber (with both closed- and open-loop modes) started at the shipyard Remontowa in Poland at the end of February. Remaining fittings will be completed during operation.

In open-loop mode, seawater is used in a specially designed spray system to reduce SOx in the exhaust gas. With continuous measurements ensuring that the water has the required alkalinity. In closed-loop mode, sodium carbonate is added in a closed system by a newly developed dosing system, enabling operators to avoid using more expensive and unwieldy caustic soda.

Water discharged overboard complies with all applicable regulations (MEPC.184 (159)). In closed-loop mode, the recirculated water is purified before it is discharged. Washwater residues are collected in tanks and are delivered in the respective ports of call.

The scrubbers will be certified by classification society, Lloyd’s Register. Marine Exhaust Technology noted that the system was of a very compact design, and was installed without major changes to the ship’s construction.
