DNV certifies LCO2 carrier design

Awarded to Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL), MISC Berhad (MISC), Petronas CCS Ventures (PCCSV) and Shanghai Merchant Ship Design and Research Institute (SDARI), the certification builds on an earlier approval in principle granted in 2023.

It marks a major milestone in advancing carbon capture and storage (CCS) solutions in the Asia-Pacific region.

“The LCO2 carrier is an indispensable component in building a cross-border CCS value chain across Asia-Pacific,” said Daisuke Fujihashi, general manager, Carbon Solutions Business Development Unit, MOL.

“This GASA certification by DNV demonstrates the feasibility of safe and efficient CO2 transport and marks a significant step toward a decarbonised society.”

The vessel design includes an advanced cargo containment system and reliquefaction technology to enhance the safety and efficiency of long-haul LCO2 transport.

Additional features such as an LNG-fuelled propulsion system, optimised hull design, and energy-saving technologies contribute to its environmental performance.

“LCO2 carriers address one of the biggest gaps in the CCS value chain,” said Zahid Osman, president and group chief executive of MISC.

“This recognition by DNV aligns with our long-term #deliveringProgress strategy and reinforces the importance of partnerships in achieving sustainability goals.”
