RuleAgent enables users to query DNV’s extensive rules and standards using natural language, delivering targeted answers drawn directly from its official database. The system is fully integrated with more than 30,000 pages of regulatory material, allowing users to quickly identify relevant sections without manually navigating multiple documents, chapters and editions.

“Digitalisation continues to reshape maritime operations, and DNV is committed to leading this development in a responsible and practical way,” said Cristina Saenz de Santa Maria, interim chief executive, maritime at DNV.

“By applying advanced AI to our rule framework, we are strengthening how our customers access trusted technical knowledge. This supports more efficient decision making and helps the industry navigate an increasingly complex regulatory landscape.”

The tool presents results in real time, highlighting applicable rule paragraphs while also providing summaries and direct links to source documents. This ensures users can verify information and apply their own professional judgement. When vessel-specific data is available, RuleAgent further refines responses based on ship type and class notation, improving relevance and accuracy.

The launch comes amid a broader push across the maritime sector to deploy AI-driven tools. Organisations such as Lloyd’s Register and ABS are also investing in digital compliance and analytics platforms, while companies including Kongsberg Digital and Wärtsilä are integrating AI into operational and performance systems. However, many of these solutions focus on data analytics, asset optimisation, or broader decision support rather than direct interrogation of rule sets.

RuleAgent stands out for its tight integration with an authoritative rules database and its emphasis on traceability. By linking every answer back to official DNV documentation, the tool addresses a key industry concern around transparency and trust in AI-generated outputs.

Initially covering key rule categories and reference documents, RuleAgent has been piloted with selected users, with further expansion planned as DNV continues to refine the platform.
