DNV releases alternative fuel safety insights

The classification society’s ‘Safe introduction of alternative fuels – Focus on ammonia and hydrogen as ship fuels’ provides shipowners with insights and tools to safely implement these fuels.

Both are emerging as viable options in the drive to decarbonise, but the absence mandatory regulations governing their use presents a serious risk and is a barrier to widespread adoption, says DNV.

“To safely operate ships using hydrogen or ammonia as fuel, ensuring that the crew understands the specific hazards of these fuels and the safety features built into the design is vital,” said Linda Hammer, principal engineer at DNV and lead author of the whitepaper.

“This will require updates to the safety management system, building in detailed operating procedures, comprehensive training for up-skilling personnel, and potentially making organisational changes.”

The white paper provides tools for shipowners, including classification rules and early engagement with flag administrations, to ensure safe fuel implementation.

In addition to its white paper, DNV is supporting the development of ammonia and hydrogen through several initiatives, including the Nordic Roadmap for Future Fuels, the Green Shipping Programme, and the MarHySafe joint development project.

To help the industry adapt, DNV has developed prescriptive classification rules for ammonia-fuelled ships, published in 2021, and for hydrogen-fuelled ships, published in July 2024.
