DNV updates maritime simulator standard

As ship systems grow increasingly complex and alternative fuels gain ground, simulation plays a vital role in preparing maritime professionals for operational challenges.

The updated standard reflects this shift by refining simulator classifications and expanding requirements to support more adaptable and environmentally conscious training.

“The wellbeing of seafarers is critical in sustaining resilient and effective vessel operations in a rapidly transforming industry,” said Geir Dugstad, senior vice president and technical director at DNV.

“High-quality and realistic simulation training plays a vital role in preparing crews for the real-world challenges they will face.

“This revision supports the industry’s efforts to maintain high training standards while embracing change and innovation.”

Key updates include the introduction of terminology for virtual reality, synthetic environments and mixed reality, recognising the growing diversity of simulation formats. The revised standard now also covers alternative fuels and electric/hybrid propulsion.

Further changes clarify classification for simulator types (e.g., Class A and D), align with ISO 5476, and simplify annual audit requirements. Definitions for cloud-based and VR-based simulations have also been added.

“This revision responds to feedback from manufacturers and training providers, and addresses the need for clearer classification and certification pathways,” said Captain Aksel David Nordholm, senior principal specialist at DNV SeaSkill.

“It supports the integration of emerging technologies while maintaining the robustness of the certification framework.”
