DSME and POSCO to develop materials for CO2, NH3

Executive Vice President Choi Dong-gyu (right), head of Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Central Research Institute, and Vice President Se-don Joo, director of POSCO Research Center signed the cooperation agreement on 13 December.

The two companies plan to accelerate the development of new materials and the development of suitable welding technology.

“We are preparing to develop new materials such as special steel that can withstand high pressure and low temperature to transport liquefied carbon dioxide and high manganese steel to store and transport cryogenic liquefied hydrogen at minus 253℃, as well as development of welding construction technology.”

Additionally, the companies are planning to develop technology for ammonia fuel tanks.

During their 20-year cooperation, the two companies have already developed a high manganese steel fuel tank for cryogenic LNG at minus 163℃, ultra-thick TMCP steel with a thickness of 80 to 100mm that can withstand the loading weight of a super-large container ship, and LPG/ammonia at minus 55℃, as well as new materials and advanced welding technology for low-temperature steel for cargo holds that can be transported and ARC-7 Yamal icebreaking LNG YP500 steel for polar operations.
