Exmar completes its largest ship-to-ship transfer of ammonia to date

Exmar said the operation was carried out by the Exmar Ship Management crew using Kortrijk, a 38,500 cu m midsize gas carrier, which safely discharged a full cargo of ammonia in collaboration with Trammo at the port of Sohar in Oman. The company described the transfer as a significant operational milestone, highlighting the role of crew training and strict adherence to safety and operational procedures.

“This milestone operation is the perfect example of the professionalism of our well-trained crew and their adherence to the highest safety and operational protocols throughout the transfer,” Exmar said, adding that its more than 40 years of experience in handling and transporting ammonia positions the company strongly as ammonia is increasingly expected to play a role as a future marine fuel.

The ship-to-ship transfer follows the recent launch of Exmar’s first ammonia-powered gas carrier at HD Hyundai Mipo shipyard in South Korea. The 46,000 cu m LPG/ammonia carrier is equipped with WinGD’s X52DF-A ammonia-fuelled two-stroke engine.

Exmar is continuing to expand its fleet in anticipation of growing demand for low-carbon shipping solutions, with four additional 46,000 cu m midsize gas carriers under construction. These vessels will be fitted with ammonia dual-fuel engines as part of the company’s strategy to support the transition towards safer and lower-emission marine operations.
