Ferus Smit delivers LNG coastal tanker to Erik Thun
The newbuild is a 7,999 DWT coastal tanker, and the second in a new series of E-class coastal oil/chemical tankers. The vessel has a 9540 m3 cubic volume in nine coated cargo tanks, suited for MARPOL and IMO type II chemical cargoes.
The Thun Evolve is Ice Class 1A, suitable for year-round Baltic service and will be equipped with a Wärtsilä dual-fuel 6L34DF main engine has a maximum power output of 2,999kW, turning the nozzled controllable pitch propeller. The propeller nozzle improves propeller efficiency, enhancing the thrust effect and resulting in a lower EEDI for the ship.
The rudder comprises a full spade blade and flap section, to enhance manoeuvring performance and reduce drag. Close-quarter manoeuvring and berthing is assisted by an 450kW bow thruster.
The vessel is equipped with three Scania diesel gensets generating 350 kW each. The vessel is 115 metres long, 15.87 metres beam, and has a 6.95 metre draught, making it suitable for the Sodertalje Canal, near Stockholm, as well as the Drogden channel through the Oresund between Sweden and Denmark.
The vessel has been designed to minimise its environmental footprint compared with earlier tankers. Depending on fuel mode and operational settings, SOx and particulate matter emissions will be virtually eliminated, NOx cut by 80%-plus, and CO2 reduced by half. Thun estimates the vessel will benefit from 35% lower fuel consumption.
The tanker will be long-term leased to Swedish refiner and distributor Preem for deliveries to the company’s depots and customers in Sweden, Norway and Denmark. The ship will be delivered to Preem at the end of March 2019.
