First combined weather routing and voyage optimisation platform achieves promising efficiencies

The technology platform was developed by an AI maritime technology company, DeepSea Technologies, which developed, tested, and improved the solution, Pythia, in collaboration with Seanergy. The developer claims the software is the world’s first weather routing and voyage optimisation platform to be tailored to the exact performance of vessels, under all conditions.

The weather routing and voyage optimisation platform uses AI-based performance models – based on highly detailed real-time data – to analyse 19 different parameters. The AI models accurately track how a vessel performs over time under any conditions, including those related to the weather and the state of the vessel – such as the fouling levels.

Integrating real-time data with the models allows Pythia to develop dynamic, bespoke performance models for each ship, which are then used to determine the optimum routes, speeds, and trims for minimum fuel consumption.

This collaboration will permit shipowners to accurately calculate the real fuel savings and emissions reduction potential for each voyage. The approach also reduces fuel costs for charterers and other bunker bill payers, while accelerating the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions within the shipping industry.

The new platform represents the culmination of several years of collaboration in the development of a performance optimisation solution for Seanergy’s vessels. Initially, Seanergy installed DeepSea’s data collection hardware and performance monitoring platform, Cassandra, onboard four vessels. Seanergy noted that it is now deploying both of DeepSea’s platforms across its entire fleet.
