First hull survey with mini ROV for BV

The survey on board Bretagne provided an opportunity to validate the integrity of the entire ship’s hull and is said to be the first of its kind. A remotely operated drone performed an in-water survey with a BV surveyor on board the vessel. In parallel, Bureau Veritas also tested the capability with its own remote inspection solutions using full HD live video footage from MaDfly.

Laurent Leblanc, senior vice president technical & operations for Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore, said that maintaining the integrity and safety of a ship is a crucial task. “Underwater remote surveys improve safety and reduce risk, time and costs to produce high-quality results,” he said.

Bureau Veritas found that the system gives a number of benefits. It allows for safer operations as divers do not have to be in the water, it reduces preparation time, gives high-quality pictures and reduces the risk of disturbance to ship operations.
