First newbuilding order for SMDERI onboard CCUS unit
The order was placed in connection with an order for 12 x 82,000 dwt Kamsarmax at Jiangsu New Hantong Ship Heavy Industry. The vessels’ design is understood to be based on SDARI’s Dolphin 82 design. The ships are reported to be scheduled for delivery between the end of 2024 and 2025. Local media reports indicate that that the vessels will be powered by MAN B&W 6G50ME-C9.6 main movers.
The installation of the onboard CCUS system will represent the first reference of the system on board a newbuilding. The SMDERI CCUS system was awarded an Approval in Principle (AiP) from China Classification Society’s Shanghai branch in February 2022.
Although SMDERI’s CCUS is understood to rely on the mature amine-based absorption technology that has been successfully installed within China’s coal-fired power generation sector, observers are keen to see whether the SMDERI has successfully overcome the challenges of minimising parasitic energy demand, maximising absorption efficiency and reducing the unit’s footprint. Other Chinese-based amine-based CCUS systems have struggled with excessive energy consumption during initial on board trials, The Motorship understands.
