First of Grimaldi Group GG5G ro-ro series delivered
The 67,311gt Eco Valencia is the first of the Neapolitan company’s series of 12 GG5G (Grimaldi Green Fifth Generation) vessels.
The vessel is significantly more efficient in terms of fuel consumption per tonne transported than its predecessor. The Eco Valencia offers 7,800 lane-metres of capacity, equivalent to twice the capacity of her predecessor. Despite the increase in capacity, the new vessel consumes the same amount of fuel at the same speed as its predecessor. This means twice the efficiency measured in terms of fuel consumption per tonne transported.
The Eco Valencia includes two stern ramps for the simultaneous loading of vehicles, which allow for faster handling of freight. Furthermore, the configuration of its decks and the system of internal ramps make the vessel extremely flexible and capable of transporting any type of rolling cargo
The vessel emits “zero emissions in port”, as the vessel’s Li-ion battery packs are sufficient to meet the energy demands of on-board activities while berthed. The Li-ion battery packs are recharged during navigation thanks to shaft generators and 600 m2 of solar panels.
The installation in the Eco Valencia is based on two MAN B&W 9S50ME-C9.6 diesels, to give a speed of 20.8 knots. The vessel features a Rolls Royce Promas Lite system, which integrates the propeller and the rudder into a single system to optimise hydrodynamic efficiency.

“In particular, the delivery of the Eco Valencia represents an important milestone not only for our company but more generally for short sea shipping in the Mediterranean: in fact, we are deploying increasingly efficient ships with an ever lower environmental impact in the ‘Mare Nostrum’, for the benefit not only of our customers but also of the communities in the cities we serve”, concludes Emanuele Grimaldi.
The second vessel in the series, Eco Barcelona, is currently being fitted out at Jinling Shipyard at Nanjing.
Three of the series have been earmarked for service in the Baltic Sea with Grimaldi’s subsidiary Finnlines: the steel cutting ceremony for the first of the vessels was held in September.
