Fjord1 orders ferries from Multi Maritime

The ferry company has awarded a contract for the supply of two ferries to Multi Maritime, which will design the vessels. The ferries are to be fitted with a length of 74m and width of 14.2m, and will carry some 60 cars and 199 passengers, the ship design firm said in a statement.

The ferries will be built to Multi Maritime’s design at the Ada shipyard in Tuzla, in western Turkey. Delivery is scheduled for mid-2016.

Hans Kristian Dyrli, project manager at Multi Maritime, told The Motorship that the vessels will be propelled by two azimuth thrusters, each with a capacity of 750kW.

“The design was developed in close cooperation with Fjord1 and emphasis was put on creating an effective and fuel efficient design,” Multi Maritime said.

Since its maritime market entry in 1983, Multi Maritime has gradually expanded its project portfolio beyond specialist chemical tankers and OSVs to include specialised cargo carriers, vehicle and passenger vessels, high-speed ships, icebreakers and submersible heavy lift barges.

Fjord1 AS is Norway’s largest ferry company, serving passengers from Rogaland in the country’s south to Finnmark in the northern part of Norway.
