GCMD and NYK team up on decarbonisation

NYK is the first shipping company in Japan to independently obtain approval in principle for an ammonia bunkering vessel from ClassNK and is on track to retrofit an LNG-fuelled tugboat with an ammonia-fuelled engine.

NYK is also working with partners to deliver an oceangoing ammonia-fuelled ammonia gas carrier by 2026 and was a natural partner for GCMD’s ammonia bunkering safety pilot that completed in April.

“We are honoured to be GCMD’s strategic partner, and I am very confident that this partnership will greatly empower our efforts to reduce GHG emissions from the maritime sector,” said Takaya Soga, president and chief executive of NYK.

As part of GCMD’s drop-in biofuel pilot NYK trialled VLSFO (B24) on board Lycaste Peace in February 2023, contributing to the successful completion of the second of five supply chains of the full pilot.

Professor Lynn Loo, chief executive of GCMD, said NYK demonstrated a strong commitment to decarbonisation.

“This strategic partnership agreement with NYK formalises and strengthens our existing relations in working on low-carbon solutions for international shipping,” he said.
