Grimaldi extends NH3-fuelled orderbook with 5+2 order

The USD630 million order includes an option for two further vessels. The vessels will be delivered between 2025 and 2026. 

The 200 metre-long and 38-metre wide vessels will have a capacity of 9,000 ceu (Car Equivalent Unit). The newbuildings have been designed to transport electric and conventional passenger vehicles as well as other types of heavy rolling freight (up to 250 tons).

Grimalid notes that the vessels will be equipped with highly efficient ultra-modern engines. The new vessels will comply with the most stringent limits established at international level for CO2, NOx and SOx emissions. The ammonia-ready vessels will have a RINA (Italian Naval Register) Ammonia Ready class notation, which certifies that they may be converted for the use of ammonia as an alternative, zero-carbon fuel.

The vessels, which are intended to operate between Europe, North Africa, the Near East and East Asia will also be designed with shore power connections. Compared with Grimaldi’s previous generation of ships, the vessels will reduce CO2 emissions per cargo unit transported by 27%.

The new order was signed just over two months after the Group’s confirmed a 5+5 order for ammonia-ready PCTC vessels with China Merchants Heavy Industries Jiangsu.
