Harvey acquires US shipyards

The creation of the new business, under the name Harvey Shipyard Group, follows Gulf Coast Shipyard’s construction of the country’s first LNG offshore vessels. Harvey Gulf, which is investing US$350 million in building its own dual-fuel fleet, noted that it is the only American shipbuilder to meet the requirements for ABS’s ENVIRO + Green Passport Gas Fueled Ships certification.

“These shipyard acquisitions will allow us to pass along the savings of lower operating costs and environmental protection to the marine transportation industry,” said Shane J. Guidry, chairman and CEO of Harvey Gulf. The company added that it would “catapult the Gulf Coast Shipyard into a state-of-the-art builder of world-class vessels”.

In July, Harvey Gulf will open its LNG fuelling station at Port Fourchon. The US$25 million Phase I construction will be capable of fuelling Harvey Gulf’s fleet of dual-fuel offshore supply vessels as well as accommodating a growing US fleet of road vehicles operating on LNG.

“The dual-fuel vessels we’re building and our LNG bunkering facility are indicative of Harvey Gulf’s commitment to develop and utilise the safest, most environmentally-friendly vessels and fuel technology available today,” said Guidry.

The acquisitions are expected to result in an expansion of operations in Gulfport and New Orleans, Harvey Gulf added.
