HHI granted AiP for HiMSEN hydrogen-natural gas safety
The HiMSEN natural gas-hydrogen mixed fuel engine is a newly developed engine based on the HiMSEN natural gas-diesel dual fuel engine.
The testing was conducted using an LNG and hydrogen fuel mix in a 1.5MW HiMSEN engine. By increasing the proportion of hydrogen up to 25%, CO2 is reduced more than 30% (varies per load) compared to diesel engines.
By improving the compression ratio within the combustion chamber and through lean-burn technology, combustion was stabilised and various types of greenhouse gases such as CO2 and methane were reduced. As hydrogen is lighter and combustion speed is 6-9 times faster than natural gas, a higher level of engine control technology and safety design was required.
The HHI Group continues development of the hydrogen engine which it is targeting for stationary and marine applications. HHI plans to develop the pure hydrogen combustion engine by 2025.
