HHI receives AiP for AI-based fire monitoring system

The computer vision-based AI solution for internal fire monitoring aboard a vessel is the first to receive an AiP in the shipbuilding industry, according to the Liberian Registry. This new method will be one of the core technologies to manage and control safety aboard next-generation smart ships and autonomous ships.

By replacing existing fire monitoring sensors with an AI-based early fire monitoring system that combines image recognition/processing technology, ship interior and fire big data, and advanced AI algorithms, the technology could shorten the time taken by current systems to detect a fire. Fire monitoring sensors have previously taken to 2 minutes to detect a flame or smoke by the sensor.

The HHI Group system uses video and machine learning to improve the speed and accuracy of fire detection, which could significantly reduce the risk of fire inside a ship.

Further applications

Such AI-based ship safety management/surveillance systems are expected to become an essential system for safe navigation and are expected to have further applicability aboard autonomous ships that are currently being developed.

Hyundai Heavy Industries Group expects to extend the use of artificial learning to develop technologies that can detect various accidents and emergency situations (personal accidents, oil leaks, dampness, container overturns, etc.) that may occur during ship operations.

An official from Hyundai Heavy Industries Group commented, “Starting with the development of this AI-based fire monitoring system, we will pre-empt the future Autonomous Ship era by expanding it to the entire ship safety field”.
