Höegh Autoliners commits to green fuels

Led by the World Economic Forum and the US Government, the First Movers Coalition targets hard-to-abate sectors including aluminium, aviation, chemicals, concrete, shipping, steel, and trucking, which are responsible for 30% of global emissions.

More than 50 companies including Ford Motor Company, Volvo Group, Aker ASA, Yara International, Amazon and A.P. Møller – Mærsk with a combined collective market value of about USD 8.5 trillion across five continents now make up the coalition to help commercialise zero-carbon technologies.

In general, member companies commit to purchasing a percentage of near-zero or zero-carbon solutions from suppliers, despite the premium cost.

If enough global companies make commitments this decade, a market tipping point will be reached that will accelerate their affordability and drive long-term, net-zero transformation across industrial value chains.

The company already operates and own some of the world’s most efficient pure car, truck carriers (PCTCs). Its six Horizon class vessels are 40% more efficient than a standard PCTC, and the Aurora class vessels, the largest and most environmentally friendly car carriers ever built, will have DNVs “ammonia ready” and “methanol ready” notations, making the vessels the first in the segment to be ready to operate on zero carbon ammonia.

The First Movers Coalition was launched during COP-26 in Glasgow in November 2021 and was initiated by the US State Department, through Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry, and the World Economic Forum.

Biofuel option

In September 2022, Höegh Autoliners confirmed that it was offering carbon neutral shipping as an option to its customers, operating on 100% advanced biofuels (derived from sustainable waste oil). The waste oils are collected and go through the biofuel production to generate a sustainable, second-generation marine biofuel. The oil is virtually free of sulphur oxides and reduces the vessel’s net carbon emissions by 100% from tank to air.
