The Northern Green Crane project, which includes Royal Vopak as a partner, envisages transporting up to 8,000 tonnes per year of green hydrogen from an unspecified location in Sweden to Rotterdam.

The technology developer hopes that it will be able to reuse existing liquid fuel infrastructure to accelerate the implementation of the trial project, which is hopes will be among the industrial scale cross-border hydrogen supply projects.

The project envisages the transportation, with up to 40 individual consignments of 200 tonnes of benzyl toluene being carried between Sweden and Rotterdam. The project replaces a previous proposals to transport green hydrogen from Spain to Rotterdam and Germany, and benefits from Sweden’s low cost renewable energy resources.  

The Motorship notes that the LOHC technology developed by Hydrogenious uses heat transfer oil (benzyl toluene) as the hydrogen carrier, allowing it to be stored under ambient conditions and tripling the amount that can be transported compared to standard pressurised containers.

Upon delivery at Rotterdam, up to 4,000 tonnes of LOHC per year will be transhipped by barge to Lingen in Germany, where it will be converted to hydrogen at a 12 tonne per day (tpd) capacity dehydrogenation plant. The gas is expected to be used by local industrial consumers, and also be used in the GET H2 hydrogen pipeline initiative.

The remaining half of the LOHC will be converted to hydrogen at a similar 12tpd plant in Rotterdam, where it will be distributed to local industrial consumers.

The project has been submitted to the European Commission for funding within the IPCEI infrastructure framework, while Hydrogenious LOHC is also hoping to win approval for the application within the Regional Hubs and Their Links (RHATL) scheme.
