K Line partners on CO2 capture
The ‘Social Implementation of Future Marine Environmentally Harmonious Materials’ project will explore how metal-organic frameworks (MOF), a porous material with high absorption capabilities, might be used to capture CO2.
The research will see the creation of the K Line Advanced Technology Future Environment Project Laboratory at Rikkyo University in Japan, bringing on board Professor Mao Minoura’s team from the Department of Chemistry.
This new research project seeks to further expand K Line’s ocean carbon capture and storage technology by evaluating MOF’s absorption-desorption performance in the presence of CO2 emissions from a vessel’s exhaust.
It builds on K Line’s ongoing efforts to decarbonise the maritime industry, including initiatives like the operation of liquefied CO2 carriers. K Line’s previous ‘CC-OCEAN’ project in 2021 demonstrated the world’s first onboard CO2 capturing device, successfully capturing CO2 from engine exhaust gas.
