The marine-use CO2 capture demonstration plant is designed to capture a portion of a vessel’s gas emissions, and forms part of a two-year ‘CC-Ocean’ (Carbon Capture on the Ocean) project. The project aims to study  the operability and safety of CO2 capture facilities at sea.

After the vessel sails from MHI Yokohama, the small CO2 capture plant will be commissioned by a team of experts from Mitsubishi Shipbuilding, who will also evaluate the system’s operational performance, and analyse the captured CO2.

Subsequently, until the end of FY 2021, the ship’s crew will evaluate the operation, safety and operability of the CO2 capture plant, and will conduct demonstration tests  with Mitsubishi Shipbuilding. The project also intends to examine aspects such as the efficiency of the CO2 capture system, as well as the potential for size and weight reductions, in order to contribute to the commercialisation of the plant.

The joint R&D project, which also includes Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (“Class NK”), forms part of K Line’s wider decarbonisation strategy. For the installation of this plant, Class NK has conducted a Hazard Identification Study (HAZID) and verified the viewpoint of safety.
