Knud E Hansen unveils LCO2 carrier concept design

The vessel is designed for the regional transportation of liquefied CO2, and will meet requirements for the safe discharge of CO2 from the carrier. The LCO2 carrier design is understood to include IMO Type-C tanks and highly efficient reliquefication technology.

The design will also include dedicated equipment for the off-loading and optional heating of CO2 to the pressure and temperature required for underground sequestration. The vessel will be a DP-2 vessel with an anchor loading system.

The vessel’s propulsion system features a twin-skeg design with two contra-rotating propellers providing significant fuel savings, as well as, contributing to the station keeping performance. 

CO2 as a commodity

Knud E Hansen expects the design of the vessel to represent an step towards the introduction of carbon capture use and utilisation value chains. The value of CO2 as a “trade product” is based on political taxes and funding. One of the main drivers is the CO2 tax that controls the value of CO2. The Motorship notes that the EU’s Emissions Trading System is one such example of a CO2 tax. 

The CO2 tax is expected to increase in the years to come; hence, transporting captured CO2 to underground sequestration or for combination with hydrogen produced via electrolysis from renewable electricity is expected to become increasingly attractive in the future. In the above-mentioned value chain, transport of CO2 by ship from captured locations to offshore storage areas, as well as, onshore terminals will be a major industry that requires a new kind of vessel: the dedicated CO2 carrier.
