Kongsberg strengthens propulsion market position

The acquisition, for an undisclosed sum, is a key part of Kongsberg Maritime’s growth strategy and will combine two complementary businesses with expertise spanning propulsion systems, electrical technologies and vessel control solutions. The transaction remains subject to customary regulatory approvals.

Berg Propulsion is known for its integrated propulsion and electrical systems and has established a strong position in commercial shipping markets, particularly general cargo vessels and product tankers.

Following completion, Berg Propulsion will continue operating under its own brand as a standalone business unit within Kongsberg Maritime’s Propulsion & Handling division, preserving its existing culture and customer-focused approach.

Kongsberg Maritime expects the deal to create significant opportunities in lifecycle support by extending service coverage for Berg Propulsion’s installed equipment through its worldwide network. The companies also see potential for cross-selling products, including Kongsberg’s energy and control systems and Berg’s propeller technologies across commercial and naval markets.

The combined portfolio will include controllable pitch propellers, thrusters, hybrid and electric propulsion systems and integrated vessel control technologies, creating one of the industry’s broadest commercial propulsion ranges.

Berg Propulsion generated revenues of approximately €160 million in 2025, while Kongsberg Maritime reported revenues of around €2.44 billion, reflecting continued growth across its global maritime business.
