KR advances ammonia as maritime fuel

The classification society has awarded approval in principle to Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) for its 9,300 teu ammonia-fuelled container ship and signed a memorandum of understanding with HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HD HHI) to develop an enhanced ammonia fuel supply system.

The development of SHI’s container ship marks a key step in advancing ammonia-fuelled propulsion systems, said chair and chief executive of KR, Lee Hyungchul.

“This joint development is a significant step toward the commercialisation of large ammonia-fuelled container ships,” he said.

“KR will continue to provide technical support for the innovations in decarbonisation solutions.”

SHI has developed an entirely new structural layout and design which includes specialised fuel tanks, fuel supply systems, ventilation, and gas detection systems.

“Our 9,300 teu ammonia-fuelled container ship incorporates the leading eco-friendly technologies of SHI,” said Jang Haeki, executive vice president and chief technology officer of SHI.

Ammonia fuel supply system

The MoU between KR and HD HHI will see the latter design key system configurations to integrate ammonia fuel into ammonia carriers. KR will the conduct a risk assessment of the system and grant AiP.

“Ammonia, as a zero-carbon fuel, offers significant benefits in operational economics and supply stability,” said Jung Jaejun, executive vice president of HD HHI

KIM Yeontae, executive vice president of KR’s Technical Division, added, “This joint development is an important foundation for the commercialisation of ammonia-fuelled vessels.”
