LR awards Oshima multi-fuel AiP

The AiP covers a 64,000 dwt bulk carrier designed to accommodate ammonia, methanol and methane (LNG), alongside provision for onboard carbon capture and storage.

“As future fuel options diversify and global regulations continue to evolve, flexibility is becoming increasingly important for shipowners,” said Dr Junichi Man, managing director of Oshima Shipbuilding.

“By enabling compatibility with ammonia, methanol, LNG and onboard CO2 capture systems, our concept offers a practical and future-ready solution.”

LR conducted a comprehensive technical review of the concept in line with its ShipRight Risk Based Certification framework. This assessment examined the safety, feasibility and integration of the proposed fuel systems and carbon capture arrangements, providing independent assurance that the design can progress towards detailed engineering and potential construction.

The AiP further strengthens the long-standing collaboration between LR and Oshima Shipbuilding and highlights the role of early-stage technical assurance in advancing next-generation maritime technologies.
