MAERSK EXTENDS FUEL FLEXIBILITY IN NEWBUILD TANKERS

This latest order follows on the back of a previous order made in May 2018 for six LR2 vessels.

Maersk has opted install separate cargo pumps for each tank instead of one set of central pumps on the new LR2 tankers. This enables the transportation of up to six different cargo grades, giving customers more flexibility. The Framo cargo pump HPU will be powered by 5 x 6 cylinder Scania diesel engines.

The vessels will weigh in at 110,000 DWT and will be fitted with 6G60ME-C9.5-Tier II, Part load EGB engines. Maersk Product Tankers has previously ordered MAN ES ultra-long stroke engines for other vessels in its fleet, noting that these have highly competitive fuel consumption characteristics. MAN Energy Solutions is also supplying three 900 RPM 6L23/30H Mk. II auxiliary engines.

The vessels will also be fitted with a number of features to reduce bunker consumption and associated CO2 emissions. This includes frequency-controlled sea water pumps and low energy consuming equipment, such as engine room fans, boiler blower, main engine economizer energy control, as well as hydrodynamic features such as a propeller pre-swirl duct, to optimise energy consumption.

All ten vessels are expected to be delivered between 2020 and 2022.
