Methane-splitting tech for marine propulsion

The agreement, announced in October 2024, aims to harness Hycamite’s methane-splitting technology, which transforms methane into hydrogen and solid carbon through a low-temperature pyrolysis process.

“We believe methane-splitting can provide a cost-effective solution to decarbonising marine power, while also creating valuable carbon products with a minimal environmental impact.”

Feasibility study

The collaboration seeks to advance sustainable marine propulsion by integrating “Turquoise Hydrogen” – a cleaner form of hydrogen, into maritime vessels.

Hycamite’s first industrial-scale methane-splitting plant, set to begin operations in 2025 in Kokkola, Finland, will be the foundation for the initiative.

MOL PLUS and MOLEA will explore the feasibility of integrating this technology into marine vessels, potentially revolutionising marine propulsion with clean hydrogen derived from methane.

The collaboration highlights the growing role of innovative alternative fuels and clean technologies in reducing the maritime industry’s carbon footprint.
