Mitsubishi Shipbuilding in LCO2 carrier joint study project

Nihon Shipyard intends to begin construction of the vessel following the conclusion of the project. 

The Motorship notes that Mitsubishi Shipbuilding has developed practical experience of advanced gas handling technology during the design and construction of LPG and LNG carriers. Mitsubishi Shipbuilding is also constructing a demonstration LCO2 carrier. The ground breaking ceremony for the 72m-long 1,450cbm LCO2 carrier was carried out on 7 October 2022 at Mitsubishi Shipbuilding’s Shimonoseki shipyard. 

Mitsubishi Shipbuilding is actively pursuing the development of LCO2 carriers and the commercialisation of LCO2 shipping, as part of MHI Group’s wider energy transition objectives.

The company notes that demand for LCO2 carriers is expected to grow in the future as a means to transport large volumes of CO2 safely for CCS (Carbon dioxide Capture and Storage) projects, in which captured CO2 is stably stored underground. Following the lead of the EU region, it is expected that CCS projects in Asia will be accelerated by the promotion of national governments, it will be essential to establish a shipbuilding framework in Japan to meet the demand for LCO2 carriers.

Nihon Shipyard, in anticipation of future regulations restricting CO2 emissions, is proactively working toward the commercialization of LNG and ammonia fueled ships. As its next initiative, the company is considering the potential for LCO2 carriers, aiming to further solidify its leading position in the industry.
